Neumann Falls to Dickinson in Home Opener

March 22, 2006

Box Score

Aston, PA- The Neumann College baseball team fell just short of victory in their season home opener against non-conference opponent Dickenson College 11-10 in seven innings.

The game was back-and-forth from the start with the Knights taking an early 3-1 lead. Craig Steve Maloney (Aston, PA/Sun Valley H.S.) started things off with a single followed by a Josh MacDonald (Newark, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) double putting Neumann in good scoring position. From there an error by the Red Devils put James Jordan (Upper Darby, PA/Monsignor Bonner) on first and scored Maloney for the Knights' first run of the day. Ryan Nason (Voorhees, NJ/Paul VI) flied out, but not before MacDonald tagged up and crossed the plate to take the lead. Jordan then capitalized on an error by the Red Devils as a wild pitch gave him the space he needed to put the Knights up 3-1.

Dickinson scored two runs in the second inning, and four runs in the third to take the lead, but

Neumann answered right back with 4 runs of there own in the bottom of the third making it a 7-7 ball game. After a scoreless fourth inning the Knights went up 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth after Kevin Ahern (Parkside, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) was walked and doubles by Marc Torriero (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) and David Thompson (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI H.S.) set Neumann up to regain the lead.

However two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to gave Dickinson an 11-9 edge. Neumann's Nason answered with a singled in the bottom of the seventh and then stole a pair of bases cutting the deficit to 11-10 before the game was called on account of darkness.

Neumann Returns to action on Friday, March 24, 2006 when they host College Misericordia in their first PAC match up of the season.
