Senior Mike Collichio took the mound to start the game for the Knights

Baseball Team falls to Eastern

March 25, 2008

St. David's, Pa. - Box Score

The Neumann College baseball team travelled to St. David's, Pa. to take on Eastern University in the third game of the three game series. The Knights had just lost two close match-ups to the Eagles the day before and were looking to get after the Eagles again. While the Knights were able to jump out to an early lead they were not able to hold onto the lead and suffered a loss.

The scoring started in the top of the second inning for the Knights. George Hatton doubled in his at-bat. Steven Marucci singled and gained the RBI to put the Knights up 1-0. The Knights would see Eastern tie game in the bottom of the second.

Eastern would grab control of the game in the fourth inning as the Eagles scored six runs. The Knights' pitcher Mike Collichio had gone as far as he could go and was replaced by freshmen Kurt Hayes. The Eagles weren't going to be denied and continued to work the plate and generate runs.

The Knights wouldn't say die and battled back in the top of the fifth inning scoring two more runs to make the deficit 7-3. The inning started with Marucci grounding out to third base. Ray Schmoltze singled, followed by Brian Alburger earning a walk. Lincoln Schrock was hit by a pitch and the Knights were in position to score. Ryan Nason singled to score Schmoltze. This was followed up with Keith Mastronardo grounding out to first base but scoring Alburger from third for his effort.

The Knights could not pull any closer and ended up falling to the Eageles 23-8. The Knights' next game will be played on Friday March 28th against conference rival Marywood. Game time is set for a 3 p.m. start in Scranton, Pa.
