The Neumann Knights baseball team fell to the Crusader's of Alvernia College 8-5 and 17-2 on the Neumann College Bruder Fields in a PAC afternoon double header.
In the opener, the two teams were close to perfect in the first inning. Neumann Knight Phil Kelly (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Alvernia's Tim Frisch started on the mound, keeping the first inning even at 0-0. In the second inning Neumann's defense kept the Knights moving forward as second baseman David Thompson (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI H.S.) made two key stops, surrendering the inning with only one casualty, an unearned run which was batted in by Tim Carroll. The 1-0 visitor lead would not last long. Neumann picked up the bats for three consecutive single hits off of Frisch in the second inning. Marc Torriero (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) banged in lead off hitter Josh MacDonald (Newark, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech). MacDonald was quickly joined by joined by Christopher Dascher (Horsham, PA/M.C.C.C.) and Torriero when a Kevin Ahern (Parkside, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) double sent the pair home. The Knights carried their lead through the six but were unable to avoid a six-run seventh inning by the Crusaders who cap the seventh inning and the game 8-5. In the sun setter Neumann's Nick Lapetina (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) saw time on the mound giving up 3 runs in the first inning. Neumann Knight Chris Dascher got things moving for the Knights, serving up the first hit of the game, a single down right center. After a run down knocked out Dascher on the way to home, Thompson hit a shot, recording a single, but the Knights could not keep things going. Neumann ended the inning the same as it started down, 3-0. The visitors added one more to the scoreboard before the Knights found their handle. A double duce by Neumann's Dascher and Josh MacDonald scored Neumann their first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. After a quiet fourth inning, Alvernia's Zach Lutz open up the fifth inning with a 2-run homer, taking a 6-2 lead over the afternoon's host. Alvernia extended the lead 8-2 before the Knights defense ended the inning. The Crusaders managed to shut down the Knights in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, taking a 17-2 win and the season sweep over the Knights. Neumann will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Richard Stockton College. |
