Oct. 30, 2007
ASTON, Pa. - The 3rd annual Neumann College Golf Challenge to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation was held Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at the Concord Country Club in Concordville, Pennsylvania. The year's event raised more than $3000.00, tripling last year's total of $1,000.00, according to organizer Frank Sill and Neumann's Director of Athletics Chuck Sack.
The golf outing is dedicated to the loving memory of Mary, a woman who dearly loved her family and friends. Mary lost her battle with cancer but there is not a day that she is not in our thoughts and prayers. In a larger sense every family has a "Mary". In some way, each and every one of us is touched by the devastation of breast cancer. "Mary is our mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. Events like the Neumann College Golf Challenge are not only to raise money for breast cancer research, but to honor the memory of those who struggled with this disease. They are in our hearts, minds and prayers each and every day. The event is formatted in the shadows of the Golf Channel's reality show, "The Big Break," where each contestant was tested on four golf skills. The first test was a drive off the tee for distance and accuracy. The second shot tested the accuracy of a contestant's mid-iron game while the third skill tested was a wedge shot. The final test came on the putting green where each contestant could select from three putts. Contestants were awarded points for each of their successful shots. The winner was determined by a point total at the conclusion of the four events. Neumann College sophomore golfer Matt Waddington finished first with an 11-point total followed by Neumann Knight alumnus Rob Hornibrook, who was last year's winner, with a final score of 10. Freshman Dillon Quinn and Director of Aramark Facility Services at Neumann College, Brian Datte, finished in a tie for third place with a score of 9. Junior Mike Marenic finished in 4th with a score of 8 and Neumann Knights Head Men's Basketball Coach Mike Gallagher rounded out the top five with a score of 7. The Knights would like to thank and salute Concord Country Golf Club, its membership and its owners, Head Golf Coach Frank Sill for making the "Neumann College Golf Challenge" an overwhelming fundraising success. A huge debt of gratitude is owed our sponsors listed below. Their collective generosity and commitment to the cause led to the most successful outing to date.
