2007-2008 Head Coach Phil Roy

Roy Named Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach

July 20, 2007

Aston, Pa. - Neumann College athletics director Chuck Sack announced today that Phil Roy, pronounced wah, has been hired as the College's head men's ice hockey coach. Roy will begin his duties August 1.

"We are very excited to welcome Phil and his family to our Neumann College family.  Phil's experiences at Hobart and as a professional athlete made him an ideal candidate for this opportunity.  Phil's leadership style is a perfect fit for our current team and a great fit for our program.  His energy is outstanding and his passion to make Neumann ice hockey a national program is terrific." said Sack.

Roy was the assistant men's ice hockey coach for the last two seasons at Hobart College (NY). He had a hand in helping the program to its second berth into the NCAA Tournament and first Frozen Four appearance in school history. He mentored the program's first All-American defenseman and was a member of the coaching staff that garnered 6 All-ECAC West selections, 14 All-ECAC West Academic Honorees and 1 ESPN All-Academic First Team award winner. He was also a member of the 2006 coaching staff which received Coach of the Year honors by the ECAC West organization.

"I am looking forward to providing Neumann's student-athletes the opportunity to maximize their academic, athletic and social experiences as members of the Neumann College hockey team. The school, area and surrounding community has a lot to offer," stated Roy.

Prior to his two years at Hobart, Roy played 5-years of professional hockey in North America and Europe. He served as an assistant captain for the Diables Noirs de Tours, a member of the France Elite League, where he led the league in points by a defenseman. He was also a captain in the United Kingdom Elite League (EIHL) with the Basingstoke Bison.  Prior to his European career Coach Roy was member the Johnstown Chiefs and Augusta Lynx teams in ECHL.

In the American Hockey League Roy played for the St. John Flames and Cleveland Browns. At the conclusion of his inaugural professional season (2000-2001) Roy was named team Rookie of the Year by the Muskegon Fury and was selected to the UHL All-Rookie Team.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity," stated Roy. "When I retired from playing professionally I was foreseeing taking the next step and becoming a head coach. Today is a special day for me and my family. I feel this program is headed in the right direction and I am eagerly waiting the challenges ahead."

A 2000 graduate of Clarkson University, Roy recorded 77 career points, on 24 goals and 53 assists, in 144 games. He played an integral role in the team's three NCAA tournament appearances and two ECAC tournament championship teams all while earning his undergraduate degree in technical communications.

"I count my lucky stars to have had the opportunity to meet great people that helped me over the years. I would like to thank Mark Taylor and the entire Hobart community, for helping me prepare for this step in my journey," Roy said.

Roy, who will also serve as an assistant director of athletics, becomes the third men's head coach in the history of the program. He succeeds Dennis Williams, who resigned from Neumann in June to accept a position at Alabama-Huntsville.
