Men's Soccer Celebrates a Successful 2007 Season

Jan. 8, 2008

ASTON, Pa. -- The Neumann College soccer team gathered to celebrate the 2007 season in which the Knights saw many team firsts: their first opening day win, the first .500 season and the first conference tournament berth in program history. Individually, the Knights saw two student athletes receive weekly conference honors, three student-athletes named to the 2007 PAC All-Conference Team and Head Coach Kevin Sloan received Coach of the Year honors.

Freshman Zach Sell was the recipient of the freshman of the Year award.  Sell played in 12 matches with 10 starts this season.  He finished second on the team in shots on goal percentage, with a percentage of .571. Sell led all freshmen in scoring after scoring 6 goals and 2 assists for 14 points on the season.

Sophomore transfer Zack Ratliff was named the 2007 Unsung Hero for his performance as a first year Knight. This season, Ratliff played in 17 out of 18 Knights matches and made 15 starting appearances in net. Ratliff earned a 6-5 record and a .777 save percentage in between the pipes and led Neumann to their best season in program history.

Fellow transfer Jesse Urquhart also had a moment to shine as he was given the Most Valuable Offensive Player award after starting in 15-of-17 matches that he participated in as a Knight. Urquhardt, who was named to the All-PAC Second Team, had a team high 12 goals and 7 assist for 31 points in his first season with the Knights. He broke the Knights' career records for points, goals, and assists per game and is 2nd all-time in goal scoring with 12 and 3rd all-time in points with 31 and assists with 7.

Senior Mike Barbagallo was also recognized not only for his numerous soccer accomplishments, including his naming to the PAC All-Conference First team and as the 2007 Most Valuable Defensive Player but also for his commitment to his studies and to his country. The fourth-year criminal justice major and marine reservist will graduate this December. He is also a two-time All-PAC Academic Team honoree.

Fellow senior Barry Harvey was awarded the 2007 St. Francis and Clare Award, which is awarded to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement and leadership.  Harvey had a stellar career with the Knights. He appeared in 71 games and recorded 34 points over his four-year career. He is a 2007 All-PAC Sportsmanship and All-Philadelphia Area Team honoree and ranks first all-time in career assists.

Pennsylvania Athletic Conference weekly awards were also presented to Zach Sell for his selection as the conference PAC Player of the Week on Oct. 22 and Urquhardt was honored with the same distinction on Sept. 10.

At the conclusion of the night Athletics Director Chuck Sack recognized Head Coach Kevin Sloan for his accomplishments at the helm on the men's program. Sloan led the 2007 Knights to a 7-7-4 season marking the best record in program history and carried the Knights to their first PAC Tournament Berth after going 3-3-2 in the conference.

The night closed with the thanking of players, parents, friends, coaches and administrators by Sack and Sloan and a wish for even more success in 2007.
