Neumann Steals One From Under Arcadia's Grasp; Knights defeat Arcadia 4-3 in Conference Play

March 21, 2006

Results

After traffic prevented the Knights from entering the Scarlet Knights' court on time, Neumann was forced to start every singles match down 0-1 in games due to a penalization rule enforced by the Acadia University administration.  However that didn't stop the Knights from taking home their first win of the season.

As the double teams took to the court, with barely enough time to warm up, Arcadia took full advantage of the late comers. The Scarlet Knights defeated the Neumann Knights in first and third doubles to win the point, but Brothers Robert Klenk (Hatboro, PA/LaSalle) and Steve Klenk (Hatboro, PA/LaSalle) broke up the doubles sweep defeating Carl Smith and Dan Bradley 8-0.

Down one after doubles competition and down one at the start of every in singles game, due to the penalty, the Knights knew what had to be done. Neumann went on to win four out of six singles matches, stealing the win from the 2005 PAC Tournament runner up in dramatic fashion.

The first two singles of the court, #1 and #5, went Arcadia's way but Neumann answered back with wins at #2, #3, #4, and the game winner at #6. At #2 singles John Slinka earned the Knights their first point of the day, defeating Tom Fries 6-2, 6-4. He was followed by Robert Klenk who won a tightly contested match 7-6(3), 7-5. Neumann tied the contest when Matt Ford took to the court winning a close three set match 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2.

The match came down to Neumann's Barry Harvey and AU's Devin Kelly at #6 singles. Barry Harvey gave Neumann the point they needed posting a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(3) third set tie breaking victory to clinch the Knights first win of the season. Harvey was down 3-5 and 5-6 but came back in dramatic fashion with some incredible shots that propelled him to the three set win in the final moments of play.

This afternoon's 4-3 win over the hosts gave the Knights their first win of the season and marks their first PAC win as a team in over two years.
