Game winning goal scored by Senior Rachel Mease in overtime.

Field Hockey Edges Gwynedd Mercy, 3-2, In PAC Overtime Thriller

Sept. 28, 2006

Box Score

Aston, Pa. - The Neumann College field hockey team (4-6-0, 2-2-0 PAC) topped PAC rival Gwynedd Mercy (3-4, 2-3 PAC), 3-2 in overtime. Senior Rachel Mease (Gibbstown, NJ) scored the game winner six minutes into the extra session to complete the Knights second overtime win this week.

The Knights put together an impressive first half. Coming out with intensity from the opening whistle, Neumann cracked the scoreboard 15 minutes into the match when Mease scored off a penalty corner giving the Knights a 1-0 advantage. Gwynedd Mercy's Erin Reedy scored two consecutive goals, the first at 27:49 and the second at 61:22, to lift the Griffins past the Knights 2-1. However Michelle Coderre scored for the Kngihts with just over five minutes in regulation to knot the contest at 2-2.

Neumann, a man down for the first few minutes of overtime, due to a high ball penalty, managed to keep up the tempo during the ensuing seven-six-aside play. Within one minute of the return of Kaitlin Murphy making it seven on seven, Neumann's Mease was able to break away and scored the game winning goal in the 6th minute of overtime, giving Neumann a 3-2 overtime victory and extending their series record against the Griffins to 3-7.

Neumann will return to action on Friday, September 29 when they will host Rosemont College in a Neumann College Homecoming event beginning at 4:00 p.m.
