Aston, Pa.--The Knights scored two goals in the third period to beat the Hamilton College Continentals, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Ice Works Arena. Goaltender Mel Brunet stopped 50 shots on the night, while Jessica Schroeder scored two goals. Robyn Armstrong had three assists and Carolyn Fauteux added two assists. With the win the Knights avenge a 3-1 loss at Hamilton earlier in the season and improve to 7-5-3 on the year and are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games. "Mel Brunet kept us in the game tonight and it is always good to have freshmen stepping up and playing well. However, we have to stay out of the penalty box to reduce the amount of shots our opponents are taking. " stated Head Coach Matt Kennedy. The Knights got on the scoreboard first on a power play goal by Jessica Schroeder. Robyn Armstrong sent a slap shot from the point and Schroeder finished the play giving the Knights the 1-0 lead. Hamilton tried to answer when Lauren Tomford broke away from the Knights defense and went in on a breakaway but Brunet was equal to the challenge. Brunet saved 15 shots for the Knights in the first period. The Continentals again had a great opportunity on a power play but once again Brunet stopped the puck from crossing the line with a great sprawling save, keeping the Knights up 1-0 through two periods of play . Hamilton would finally get on the scoreboard with 14:56 left in the third period on a 5-3 advantage. Lauren Tomford lifted the puck over Mel Brunet's shoulder to tie the game at 1-1. Sam May broke the tie at 13:55 in the third period giving the Knights a 2-1 advantage. May skated from the right of the goal line and put it into the back of the net. Seconds later, the Continentals tied the score right back up at 2-2. Kathyrn Kroleski snapped a quick wrister that beat Mel Brunet. The Knights then went back on top 3-2 late in the third period when Jessica Schroeder showed off amazing stick skills to beat two Continentals defensemen and then the goaltender, putting the Knights back on top. That is all the Knights needed as they held on for the victory 3-2. Neumann will back in action Friday against SUNY Cortland at 7:00pm at Ice Works Arena. |
