Knights fall to Pioneers, 4-2

Feb. 19, 2007

February 19, 2007 -

Aston, PA - Neumann hosted the Pioneers of Utica College in an ECAC West women's ice hockey match up, Monday afternoon at Ice Works Arena in Aston, PA.  The Neumann Knights looked for revenge as they lost to the Pioneers on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3.

Neumann came out with a high intensity, in hopes of scoring the first goal and jumping out to an early lead.  Utica, however, opened up the scoring on a first period goal 5 minutes into the game.  Neumann played from behind for majority of the first period until Jenelle Marier put the Knights on the board with under 2 minutes to go in the period, on assists by line mates Carly Fitzsimmons and Holly Williams.  The game appeared to be going into the first intermission tied at 1, until Utica scored on a slap shot from the blue line with only 3 seconds left in the period.

The second period began with Neumann down by 1 and searching for a tying goal.  Utica soon took a two goal lead, when the Pioneers scored 2 minutes into the period to make it a 3-1 game.  Although Neumann was unable to net a goal in the second and cut into Utica's lead, the Knights showed that were not going to go down easy and continued to attack the Pioneers zone.  Neumann went into the second intermission down by 2 and hoping for strong third period.

The Knights came out with high intensity and dominated both ends of the ice, early on in the third period.  It appeared as if their hard work and determination would result in a goal at any moment.  However, Utica was able to counter-attack Neumann's pressure and intensity and netted their fourth goal of the game 8 minutes into the period.  Down by 3, Neumann continued to put pressure on Utica and showed no signs of giving up.  Their hard work finally paid off on the power play, when Vicki Scott ripped a slap shot from the blue line that was deflected for a goal by Fitzsimmons. The Knights continued to play with the same fire and intensity for the remaining minutes of the period, but were unable to register another goal.  The Neumann Knights fell to the Utica Pioneers by a score of 4-2.

The Knights will be back in action again on February 24th, when they take on Elmira College in Elmira, NY.
