Late Run Gives Neumann 4-4 Tie with SUNY Cortland

Dec. 7, 2007

BOX SCORE

ASTON, Pa. - Neumann College scored two goals in the last 25 seconds of the third period to earn a 4-4 tie at Cortland State in a women's ice hockey matinee in Cortland, New York on Friday.

Freshman Jessica Schroeder (Sudbury, ON/Sudbury Wolves) led the Knights (3-4-2) with two goals and an assist, and junior Robyn Armstrong (Sudbury, ON/Sudbury Wolves) scored two goals. Six different players collected one assist apiece. Senior goalie Teresa White (Salem, OR/Eugene Midget Boys) turned aside 19 shots.

Senior Erin Fleury (Glens Falls/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) scored a pair of goals to lead Cortland. Sophomore Jeanna Dippel (Mechanicsburg, PA/NAHA) and freshman Shannon Hakes (Rochester/Rochester Edge) scored one goal each for the Red Dragons (2-4-3), while senior Janie Byrd (Auburn/Ithaca Shooting Stars) and freshman Mallorie Maguire (Potsdam/North Country Ice Storm) each collected two assists. Junior goalie Melissa Stern (Shoreham/Long Island Waves) made 26 saves.

Cortland opened up a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal from Fleury just one minute into the game and a deflection by Hakes at 6:35. Neumann's Armstrong cut the lead to 2-1 with a high wrist shot on the power play at 7:50.  Fleury notched her second of the game on an unassisted breakaway while shorthanded at 13:59 of the opening period, but Neumann's Schroeder made it a 3-2 game with a backhand goal between Stern's pads with just 27 seconds remaining in the first.

After a scoreless second period, in which Stern denied Neumann senior Samantha May's (Whitestone/Canterbury) breakaway bid at the 4:30 mark, the Red Dragons forged a 4-2 lead on Dippel's breakaway goal at  16:50 of the third period. With time winding down, however, Armstrong cut the lead to 4-3 with a slap shot from the left point at 19:35.

After the ensuing faceoff, Neumann pulled White and Schroeder scored the game-tying goal in front with just three seconds left in regulation.

Cortland outshot Neumann, 3-2, in overtime, and had a power-play chance over the final 1:09 but couldn't put the puck past White as the two teams ended the day locked at four.

Neumann will travel to Clinton, New York to take on Hamilton College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
