McCreary's quick feet and experienced stick handling skills propelled the Knights to victory.

Knights Ride Past PAC Rival Gwynedd Mercy College 10-7 for first Conference Victory

March 9, 2006

Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, FL. - The Women's Lacrosse team met up with PAC rival Gwynedd-Mercy College in West Palm Beach, Florida scoring big in their first conference game of the season.  Last year, the Knights suffered a loss to Gwynedd-Mercy 12-5 at the same location, so they were looking to change things this time.

With both teams ready to go, the whistle blew and the first PAC match-up for the Knights was underway.  Gwynedd-Mercy gained ball control first and scored only 13 seconds into the game when Melissa Burks tallied an unassisted goal.  Only minutes later, Neumann's Brandy McCreary found the back of the net off a pass from Samantha Lafferty to tie it up. Neumann continued on a scoring streak with a goal from Courtney Murphy off a pass from McCreary, an unassisted goal from Kolleen Kitzinger, and a free-position shot from McCreary.  Gwynedd-Mercy's Kalli Bass put one more goal in for the Griffins, and Neumann's Lafferty took advantage of a free-position shot to add another goal for the Knights.  Right before the end of the first half, Michelle Coderre connected with freshman Erin O'Donnell, who scored the first goal of her college career for the Knights, making the score 6-2 Neumann.

With a somewhat comfortable 4 goal lead, the Knights entered the second half looking to possess the ball as much as possible. Thanks to the 10 caused turnovers from Courtney Murphy and the team's tremendous hustle in the midfield, Neumann was able to control the ball for most of the second half.  Kitzinger found Lafferty in front of the cage for the Knights' seventh goal of the game, and Amanda Biagi capitalized off a free-position shot for her first of 2 goals of the day.  Gwynedd's Jennifer Mathesian scored another goal for the Griffins, as did teammate Meghan Volz.  Neumann's Kitzinger took a pass from Biagi, netting her second goal of the game.  Just when the game was beginning to get a little too close for comfort, McCreary managed to find Biagi for the Knights' tenth and final goal of the game.  The Knights allowed the Griffins to score twice more before the end of the game, but the Griffins could not catch up. Between the pipes for Neumann, sophomore goalie Caitlin O'Shea had a great game, racking up 14 saves on the day.  The Knights walked away with their first PAC win with a final score of Neumann 10, Gwynedd-Mercy 7.

The Knights will host Eastern University on Wednesday, March 15th at 4pm for their next PAC game of the season.  Their record now improves to 1-0 in the PAC, 1-1 overall.
