Neumann Opens Conference Play with 1-0 Victory

Sept. 9, 2006

Box Score

Aston, Pa. - The Women's Soccer team of Neumann College (2-1, 1-0 PAC) hosted the Falcons of Cedar Crest College (1-2-1, 0-1 PAC) at Clothier Field in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, defeating their opponent 1-0 in their first conference match up of the season, under a sunny 84 degree sky.

The Knights came out strong generating numerous offensive attempts led by Maureen Muntz (Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) and Casey Geary (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City). The first half remained a tight game due to solid defense by senior Jess Kempa (Baltimore, Md/Notre Dame). Neumann dominated the last five minutes of the half with repetitive shots on goal but did not capitalize.

After a 0-0 tie in the first half, Neumann came out hungrier than ever the second half. The only road block in the Knight's road to victory was Cedar Crest's Antoinette Pizza, who made save after save to keep the game scoreless. At the other end, Neumann also received solid goalkeeping by Kelsey Toomey which included a second half breakaway save on Cedar Crest's Hilary Smith.

Neumann finally broke Pizza's shutout at 71:00 of the second half courtesy of Kim Rizzo (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) off a Jess Kempa redirection to make it 1-0.  Neumann finished the game with solid defense and generated a number of scoring chances to protect their 1-0 lead.

With the win Neumann moves to 2-1, 1-0 in conference while the Falcons fall to 1-2-1 and 0-1 in the PAC.

The Knights will head into another tough conference game Tuesday at Cabrini College.
