Neumann Splits Season Opener with Thiel College

DISNEY, Fl. -- The Neumann College softball team split a doubleheader today with Thiel College at the Wide World of Sports Complex.


The Knights beat Thiel College 6-5 in an 8-inning opener but suffered a 5-3 loss in the nightcap to start the season 1-1.


In game one, Neumann's Angela Sebasto (Trenton, NJ/McCorristin) recorded her first win of the season after relieving starting pitcher Samantha Duncan (Bear, De./Glasgow) and middleman Megan Mazur (Parlin,NJ/Sayerville War Memorial). Duncan helped Neumann jump out to a 3-0 lead before allowing three runs in the top of the fifth.   Mazur, who made her first appearance on the mound for the Knights, pitched 2 and 2/3 innings for the Knights. The freshman newcomer gave up only one run before being relieved by Sebasto who struck out four and brought home the win for the Knights in extra innings, 6-5.


Team captain Danielle Hayes (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) went 2-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, a double and a homerun for the Knights. Kirsten Lawlor (Williamstown, NJ (Our Lady of Mercy) was 2-3 with 2 RBI and Caitlin Hanrahan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) went 2-4 with a RBI and a double.


In game two Neumann jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Caitlin Hanrahan hit a 2-run double and Jen Goslin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went 2-3 to give Neumann the edge. However, late in the seventh inning Audrie Porter (Secane, Pa./Cardinal O' Hara) relieved starting pitcher Angela Sebasto and struggled to maintain the Knights lead.


"The women played well today," stated Head Coach Bill Saar. We always use this time to see what we have and what we need to work on and that is what we did today. It will only help us in the future. This team doesn't just play for April we play for May and we have a competitive season ahead of us."


Neumann College returns to action on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 vs. Northland College at the Wild World of Sports Complex in Disney, Fl. The first game is schedule to begin at 9 a.m.
