Home Runs Lead Neumann to a Two-Game Sweep of Gwynedd Mercy in PAC Softball Action

April 1, 2006

Box Score

In the first game of the afternoon double header,  Neumann was able to capitalize off an inside, to close for comfort pitch, which struck Lauren Gallagher allowing her take a base and put Neumann in good  scoring position. GMC's pitchure, Christina Peoples then served up four balls to Samantha Duncan before welcoming Kirsten Lawlor to the plate. Lawlor waited for her pitch before serving up her seventh doubled of the season which scored Gallagher for a 1-0 Knights lead. Starting Pitcher Angela Sabasto, who allowed just one hit in seven innings and struck out nine Griffins, also proved valuable on the offensive side of the bat scoring a solo home run in the 6th inning. Sabasto's homer proved to be more than the Knights needed to earn the freshmen her third shutout of the season.

In the second game the Knights came out big in the first inning of play. Danielle Hayes hit a three run homer to take a 3-0 lead on the Griffins. The Knights never looked back.

Neumann later tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth, putting the score at 8-0. Doubles by Gallagher and Danielle Hayes, and singles by Gianna Marrone and Monica Gencarelli set the stage for Caitlin Hanrahan who homered scoring Hayes and Kim Zlupko. The Knights gave the Griffin's one more shot at the plate before the game was called following GMC's rotation due to an 8 run rule.

The double win the Knights moves to 10-2 in the PAC and 17-5 overall, while the Griffins fall to 2-5 in the PAC and 5-13 overall.

Neumann will take a short hiatus before returning to action on Friday, March 7 when they will be hosted by Alvernia College at 3:00 p.m.
