Aston, PA. -
Neumann took on defending conference champion Misericordia University this afternoon in a softball doubleheader. Both teams were at or near the top of the standings coming into today's competition. In fact the Cougars had a one game edge over the Knights after the Knights lost to Eastern University the night before.
In the first game of the day the Knights started junior Angela Sebasto on the mound. Sebasto pitched a scoreless game giving up 3 hits and striking out 12. The Knights gained control of the game in the second inning when they managed to score four runs. The inning started with Sebasto leading off the inning with a base hit. From there the Knights were able to contain the potent Misericordia attack and complete game one with a 4-0 victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader the Knights started freshmen pitcher Stephanie D'Ortone. D'Ortone got the Knights started in the right direction as she took control of the game early with terrific pitching. Neumann scored first to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Lauren Gallagher started the attack for Neumann by drawing a base on balls only to get injured. Gabrielle Lulias came into the game to pinch runner for Gallagher. Sebasto hit a two-run RBI which brought in Lulias and the Knights were on the board.
Misericordia came back in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Leading Misericordia's attack was Kristen Norris who smacked a two-run double. Norris' efforts helped give Misericordia a one run lead headed to the bottom of the third.
Neumann's Jen Goslin responded with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth to put the Knights up 6-4. And in the end the Knights would win 7-6 securing the victory with a solid team effort in the field and at the plate.
Neumann will return to action on Thursday April 17, 2008 when they visit Haverford College. The game will start at 3 p.m. Neumann improves to 19-7 overall and 12-2 in the PAC.
