HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Neumann College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Haverford College on Thursday afternoon. The Knights took the first game, 9-8. The Fords took the nightcap, 6-0.
The Fords started the high scoring affair of game one with four runs in the first. The first five batters reached base via a single or walk.
The Knights scored were unable to get on the board until they got three runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run home run by Angela Sebasto. Haverford added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up by a 6-3 score.
Neumann batted around plus two in the fifth inning and scored five runs to take the 8-6 lead. The teams traded runs in the sixth inning and Neumann took a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning producing the final margin. Haverford pitcher Lisa Karmel put the Knights down in order in the top of the seventh. Julia Keenan answered by shutting down the Fords in the seventh, 1-2-3.
Stephanie Marrone and Sebasto each had two hits and scored two runs for the Knights. Sebasto added four RBI. Stephanie D'Ortone pitched 4.1 innings for the Knights. She allowed seven runs on six hits and eight walks. She had 11 wild pitches. Keenan went 2.1 innings in relief for her second save of the season. She allowed one run on one hit and struck out three.
In game 2, Haverford (17-11) opened the scoring in the first inning. The Fords added two more runs in the second on a two-run double by Dana Irshay. Natalie Richman hit her third home run on the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, to put Haverford up 6-0 and seal the win.
Keenan (3-3) started the game for Neumann (20-8). She went four innings, striking out four and allowed three runs, two earned. Megan Mazur went two innings. She gave up three runs on four hits.
Neumann will head to Gwynedd Valley, PA on April 19th for a conference double header against Gwynedd-Mercy College for a 1:00 p.m. game.
