Neumann Softball Advances to P.A.C. Championship Game

May 3, 2008

Dallas, Pa. - Neumann beat Alvernia College and Misericordia University to Advance to Sunday Final.

The Neumann College Softball team took on Alvernia College in the opening round of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Softball Championship today. The second seeded Knights played the third seeded Crusaders in Dallas, Pa. as Misericordia University hosted the tournament as the number one seed. The Knights were looking to continue the momentum they started after last weekend's sweep of Cabrini College.

Neumann scored early in the game and took a 3-0 lead by the end of third inning. Junior Danielle Hayes led the attack going three for three including a two-run homerun. The Knights continued to add to their lead when sophomore Jen Goslin connected for a solo homerun to make it 6-0. Neumann would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and win the game 8-0.

Facing number one seeded Misericordia University in second game of the day the Knights jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when junior and starting pitcher Angela Sebasto scored from third base on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. But Misericordia came right back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homerun by Gina Urbon to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead after two innings.

The Knights went scoreless in the third inning while the Cougars continued to add to their lead. Hollie Sarnak increased MU's lead to 3-1 when she smashed a single to the outfield. Continuing to struggle in the fourth inning the Knights could not muster any runs at all. At the same time Misericordia's Nicole Wenner put the Cougars in a position to score with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wenner's single was followed by Ashley Ballard's double which brought Wenner in to score giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead headed into the fifth inning.

The score stayed the same through the fifth inning and the Knights headed to the sixth inning knowing they needed to generate some type of offense. Sophomore Jen Goslin led off the sixth inning with a walk. Neumann's coach, Bill Saar, brought in sophomore Gabrielle Lulias as a pinch runner for Goslin. Lulias was able to score quickly when junior Danielle Hayes doubled with a monster hit to the fence making the score 4-2 in favor of Misericordia. Saar brought in another pinch runner for Hayes when he inserted freshmen Ericka Varga into the game. Senior Tina Walsh did the rest as she too doubled to bring home Varga and make the score 4-3 in favor of Misericordia.

Neumann freshmen Kim Kirkpatrick led the seventh with another double. Kirkpatrick tied the game a moment later as she was able to score on an error by Misericordia. The Knights kept the pressure on with a walk by sophomore Caitlin Hanrahan who would score the winning run on another error by Misericorida making the score 5-4 in favor of Neumann.

Junior Angela Sebasto pitched both games for the Knights picking up both victories. Sebasto struck out seven Misericordia players while giving up nine hits. Neumann will play the winner of the Gwynedd Mercy College versus Misericordia University game tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the P.A.C. Championship.
