Lafayette, N.C -- Neumann College and Ursinus College squared off in the elimination game of the 2008 NCAA Softball Regional on Saturday afternoon. Despite a gallant effort by the Knights Ursinus took game nine of the regional, 3-1, ending the Knights 2008 season.
Neumann took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when Jen Goslin (Coatesville, PA /Coatesville) recorded her second double of the day scoring Deanna Christy (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) who drew the walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ursinus responded with some keen offensive play from Jennie Moore who singled and advance to second on a fly out before stealing third. Moore scored on an error by Kimberly Kirkpatrick (Springfield, PA /Springfield) which evened the score at one.
In her first NCAA Tournament appearance freshman starting pitcher Julia Keenan (Philadelphia, PA/St. Huberts) struck out her first batter in the middle of the second inning to help keep the Bears at bay. Neumann picked up the bats in the third but could capitalize on any opportunities. However, the Knights defense pulled together to retire the side in the bottom of the inning.
Ursinus took the lead in the fourth after Jamie Miles singled, stole two bases and took advantage of an error by Christina Walsh (Downingtown, PA /Bishop Shanahan) to give the Bears a 2-1 lead over the Knights. The Bears got one more hit before Head Coach Bill Saar made a pitching change and brought in freshman Stephanie D'Ortone (Springfield, PA /Springfield) to relieve Keenan who pitched 3.1 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 strike out. With two outs on the board Lindsay Schmidt hit in to a double play as Neumann's Caitlin Hanrahan (Springfield, PA /Springfield) jumped up, tagged home and made the throw to 1st baseman Jen Goslin to end the inning.
Neumann couldn't get things started in the 5th and unfortunately that was not the case for Ursinus who took advantage of D'Ortone's inexperience as Moore drew the walk and advanced on a wild pitch. This set up Kaitlyn Sutherland whose RBI single scored Moore to give the Bears some insurance.
Neumann put forth great effort in the six but could not cross the plate. Kirkpatrick walked and advanced to second off a sacrifice hit by Stephanie Marrone (Blackwood, NJ /Triton Regional). She was sent to third on a Hanrahan ground out however, she was left stranded as Goslin grounded out to end the top of the inning.
Neumann managed to keep Ursinus scoreless in the bottom 6 but they could not get the bats going as Ursinus went on to win it 3-1.
With the loss the Neumann Knights end their season 29-13. However, they will return home to a champions welcome as no other team has accomplished what this elite 2008 team has accomplished. They have set a standard of grace, class and a winning tradition that will be remembered for years to come.
