Neumann Beats Eastern University to Advance to PAC Semifinals

June 30, 2005

St. David's, PA - The #5 seeded Neumann College Knights (18-17, 13-9 PAC) upset the #4 seeded Eagles of Eastern University (20-15,17-5 PAC), 5-2, Wednesday afternoon, May 4, 2005, in the first round of the PAC playoffs.

A two-run RBI triple by Neumann's Kirsten Lawlor (So/OF/Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy) started a two out, 4-run second inning for the Knights that proved to be the difference as Neumann advances to the PAC semifinals.

With two outs in the second inning, Neumann's Christina Walsh (Fr/C/Downingtown, PA/ Bishop Shanahan) singled up the middle followed by Traci Reed's (So/IF/Haverford, PA/Haverford) hit by pitch to give Neumann first and second. Lawlor's shot to right field went off the glove of Eastern's Brianne Wasser (So/OF/Telford, PA/Souderton) and her stand up triple put the first two runs of the game on the board. An RBI single by Kim Zlupko (So/2B/Cinaminson, NJ/Cinaminson) scored Lawlor and another single by Erin Fagan (Sr/IF/Fairless Hills, PA/Conwell Egan) allowed Samantha Duncan's (Fr/SS/Bear, DE/Glasgow) double to put the Knights up 4-0.

The Eagles managed to get two in the sixth when Val Thompson (Sr/2B/Monrovia, MD/Urbana) reached on a single and Ashley Keyser (Sr/1B/,PA/Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) walked to give Eastern first and second. Back to back singles by Stephanie Okeson (So/C/Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) and Ashley Lewis (Fr/OF/Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) scored the only two runsfor Eastern.

Neumann scored an insurance run in the 7th on an RBI single by Cynthia Steigerwalt (Fr/DH/Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) to put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Starting Pitcher Kelli Ann Meehan (FR P/SS 5'4" R/R Cardinal O'Hara Springfield, PA) threw a complete seven inning ball game, fanning nine, walking one, and giving up two runs on five hits. Neumann College will advance to the PAC Semifinals this weekend at College Misericordia with a 12:00 PM game time start.

Today's outcome marks the Knights first playoff victory in program history and avenges a 6-5 lost to the Eagles at Eastern University in 2004 at the PAC Semifinals.
