The Neumann Knights Women's Tennis Team Conquered the Scarlet Knights of Arcadia University 5-4

Sept. 27, 2005

The Neumann Knights women's tennis team conquered the Scarlet Knights of Arcadia University 5-4 on their home courts in Aston, PA Tuesday afternoon.

Neumann won doubles in straight sets. The #1 doubles pair of Sarah Tomlinson (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and Melinda Howell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) went up 4-1 against Arcadia's Brittany McCall and Tonya Chupka to start the match. AU battled to a 7-7 tie but it was the Neumann Knights who pulled out the last two points to win the first points of the day.

The duo of Laura Bodish (Coplay, PA/Whitehall) and Rachael Mayer (Seaford, DE/Seaford) at #3 doubles also started off with a 4-1 lead however, AU was able to show some skill, earning a 7-5 advantage. "We relaxed when we got ahead allowing Arcadia some room to move, fortunately for Neumann, our team knows how to battle for the win," stated Head Coach Chris Gosseaux. The pair came up with the power forehand which turned the match in Neumann's direction giving the Knights a 7-9 victory and their second point of the afternoon.

Shamira Cannon (Chester, PA/The Christian Academy) and Katie Nell (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) teamed up at #2 doubles which was extended into a tie-breaker as both sides rallied for points. The Neumann Knights battled to 8-8, winning the match in a 7-3 tie-breaker, and putting Neumann up 3-0 after the completion of doubles competition.

In singles play, Tomlinson continued with powerful force at #1, defeating McCall 6-2, 6-4. With the win Tomlinson extended the Knights lead to 4-0.

Arcadia came back to win #2, #4, and #5 singles and as light faded, the PAC contest came down to #3 & #6 singles. Neumann's Cannon faced off against Arcadia's Sarah Palmer at #3, while Mayer faced off against Arcadia's Shanel Isantucci at #6.

In a #3 singles match that took over two and a half hours, Palmer took the first set 6-4. Cannon played the second set into a 6-6 draw, winning the tie breaker 7-6. The two faced off in a third set with Cannon going up 4-love. She then proceeded to lose the next five games. A determined Cannon rebounded, winning the next three games to close out the set 7-5, to give the Neumann Knights their 5th point which clinched the match victory.

Due to darkness #6 singles was played to an 8-game pro-set with Mayer taking a 5-2 lead. Arcadia's Shanel Santucci turned the tables halting Mayer's effort and earning Acadia their final point of the match 8-6.
